The term “antiphonal” indicates that the song is performed back and forth between voices. In many European churches, balconies allowed one group of musicians to sing facing another, enabling them to perform in a call-and-response manner from balcony to balcony. This created a beautiful sound that resonated above and enriched the listening experience below.
