Art: Make a Star, Celebrate the Wonder of God

Two yellow stars (one has writing on it)

By Becky Joy Aitken (www.beckyjoyart.com)

The Lord merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born. Psalm 33:6 (NLT)

Materials

  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • String or yarn
  • Glue or tape
  • Access to a printer
  • Yellow paper (optional)
  • Battery powered fairy lights (optional)

Instructions

  1. Print 2 copies of the star template (last page). If you have yellow paper, you can use that to make your star yellow. Cut along the bold lines.

Start with the outside pentagon. Then do the small cuts on each side.

  1. In the blank parts in between the dotted lines, write words describing God or draw pictures showing the wonder of God.

If you are using white paper, you can choose to use yellow and orange markers to make the star seem yellow (or you can choose to use other colors that celebrate your words and drawings). If you are using yellow paper, use markers that pop out from the yellow.

Creative challenge: Can you turn the words and pictures into a pattern or design that fills the whole star?

  1. Fold and unfold each dotted line. Start with the 5 long lines across the star, then fold the small glue flaps under.

Following the folds you’ve already made, refold each point of the star so that the long line folds on the top (mountain fold) and the short lines fold in the middle (valley fold). It can be helpful to fold all of the triangle together before unfolding.

Unfold the star so that the middle of the star points up.

  1. Tape a piece of yarn or string inside one of the tips of the star on either side. Optional: Tape a string of battery powered fairy lights inside the star. Spread them out however you would like. Tie the battery pack to your string.

Put glue on the inside flaps of one of the stars, then carefully attach the other star so the glue flaps on each side glue together, and the two stars come together to make one 3D star.

Tip: It can be helpful to pull the glue flaps out on both sides before gluing so that they aren’t bent inwards away from each other.

  1. As you put the stars together, you can gently push down to make sure the flaps connect and the sides are aligned. Just don’t push too hard so that the star inverts itself.

Optional: You can also use regular scotch tape on the outside edges instead of gluing the inside.

  1. After the glue is dry, hang your star up. When you look up to see the star, think about how amazing it is that God placed so many stars in the sky. Talk to Him about it.
